Geek Boutique: Girls Grok Science

GirlScouts_4611_028.jpgGirlScouts_4611_015.jpg
Geek Boutique: Girls Grok Science is a newly forming Discovery Museum program that addresses girls-only science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) content. The museum has offered three on-location, girls-only STEM days in partnership with Fort Lewis College Education Students and the Girl Scouts of Colorado. Our goals for girls’ programming include:

  • Broaden girls’ interest in STEM

  • Sustain girls’ interest in STEM
  • Present ideas about careers in STEM
  • Provide positive role models, both female and male, from diverse backgrounds
  • Increase self-efficacy levels in STEM fields

Girls’ programming fits the Durango Discovery Museum mission: to spark curiosity, ignite imagination, and power exploration. In our rural Four Corners region, access to unique programs (like a girls’ only) is limited. GirlScouts_4611_020.jpg

  • Since 2008, we’ve partnered with the SW Colorado Girl Scouts to present STEM activity days. We’ve served more than 80 girls in this capacity, with direct day-long STEM programming ... only for girls.
  • Since 2008, we've served 79 girls in our Camp Discovery program.
  • Approximately 40% of our Sudden Science students are girls — so an increase is in order!
