STEM Education Internships for High School Students

Interested in building robots, making fire tornados, exploring mineralogy, weather patterns, and slime? If you are passionate about science, technology, engineering, math, science education, and/or museum studies, this internship is for you!

WinterCamp144.jpgThe Durango Discovery Museum is pleased and excited to offer Science Education High School Internships. For ages 14-18!  A three-month, unpaid internship is intended for high school students interested in science, science education and/or museum studies. This is a volunteer position, but interns may be eligible for a paid position when available.

Be an agent of change – leave your mark and gain skills in the process!

This unique experience will provide high school interns with leadership experience, teaching experience, museum management and operations experience as well as an understanding of basic STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) knowledge and concepts. Working closely with museum education staff members, interns will learn the ins and outs of a science museum, expand their scientific knowledge and teach basic scientific concepts to visitors of all ages.  As a significant amount of the youth intern’s duties will involve public interaction, the intern will be expected to improve and cultivate good social and interpretive skills. It is the museum’s hope that interns will grow and develop not only as science educators and facilitators, but also as individuals!

WinterCamp126.jpgEXPECTATIONS

  • Three-month commitment
  • Ages 14-18
  • Interns will be expected to commit at least 3 hours per week. The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday, but education programs run Monday-Saturday. Specific hours and schedules will depend on the student’s availability and interests.

Below is a list of possible duties expected of our wonderful Science Education High School Interns (although specific duties will certainly vary based on intern interests and experience).

  • Shadow DDM Educational staff during Sudden Science, Lego League, Solar Roller and other educational programs offered by the Museum.
  • Facilitate story time and enhance visitor experience in the Discovery Kids zone
  • Stand behind a “touch-cart” and facilitate simple hands-on science lessons for visitors.
  • Welcome school groups and assist in school group tours

  • Independent projects that help museum staff and/or enhance visitor experience
  • Assist education staff with birthday parties, stage demonstrations and summer science camps (Camp Discovery)

QUALIFICATIONS

Science Education High School Interns must be in high school and show a high level of interest and enthusiasm in learning/teaching science and working at a museum.
