Mission Revival meets Tesla’s mad science in the Powerhouse

Teslathinker2.jpgThe Durango Discovery Museum is housed in the Powerhouse, circa 1893. The building is the first example of Mission-style architecture in a commercial project outside of California.

Imagine Nikola Tesla making the trip down to Durango from his lab in Colorado Springs to advise and consult on the controversial steam-powered AC electric plant built and operated here by the intrepid founders of Durango Light & Power Company.

Rumors from that time abound to this day: Was the “War of the Currents” a mere marketing ploy? Were Tesla and Edison arch enemies or secret friends? Come help solve the many mysteries of this historic site. And take a picture or 10 beside the massive turbines and boilers—these relics of our retro-futuristic past—preserved inside our new interactive science center.
